Blog 2 (submitting for class)
Lately I have been really taken with watching documentaries and reading various websites about conspiracy theories. Some of the things I hear about still seem pretty crazy to me, but some of the other things, not so much anymore. It's fascinating that there are so many topics that I have never given any thought to before. Whether they are true or not is not so much the point as there being a whole range of possibilities that I have never considered.
I guess what sparked writing this blog is that I have begun to consider how stupid and easily manipulated people are, myself included, and whether this stupidity is being encouraged (or fanned like a flame) among us. I think that it is.
There are so many things that governments (or secret societies...) cover-up, change, and deny that it makes it difficult to know what is really going on. We obviously cannot leave it up to the government to tell us the truth, so whatdo we do? It is a scary thought that we are only given information that other people want us to have. The point of this blog is not really to go into all the different conspiracy theories that I have heard about, but just to consider that there is alotwe do not know, and a lot that we are purposely not being told. Examples of this would be things like area 51, monarchies and government officials being all connected through bloodlines, secret society obejectives and plans, as well as the supposedlyapproaching date of December 21, 2012 and the establishment of a one-world government.
Besides this conspiracy stuff, there are other things going on. Other things like our growing obssession with celebrity cultureand our lessening knowledge about what is going on in the world. Maybe it is just me, but this obssession with things likeBritney Spears not wearing underwear, Lindsay Lohen in and out of rehab, Amy Winehouse smoking crack, seems so irrelevant and stupid. Who freaking cares and why do we care? Somehow it just seems trivial when compared to wars taking place in the world, people dying, and possibly huge changes coming our way on a global front. Yet, this is what people want to know about, what they look at on the internet, watch on tv, and what they spend money to read about in magazines. Okay so maybe people do not always want to hear about serious issues, but really is the best we can do making a following of talentless individuals who do nothing good for the world? (with the exclusion of AmyWinehouse of course because I think her music is pretty awesome) I know that maybe I sound a little harsh, but I cannot believe the extent of ourcelebrity craze, it kind of makes me angry. I go for dinner at my grandmother and aunt's place sometimes during the week and well first we watch a littlebit of the news, but then we watch like an hour of crap about celebrities. First Access Hollywood and then E talk or whatever it's called. Most of the stuffin the second show is just a repetition of what was said in the first show, yet still, we watch them both. Those evenings usually go a little somethinglike this, I get mad and usually rant about how stupid it is and they tell me to shut up so they can hear the tv. It isn't just my grandmother and auntthough, it's thousands/millions of people. I even catch myself sometimes, I won't try to deny it. But really, there are much more important things to careabout in the world and I think we are getting dangerously close to losing sight of that.
On a completely different topic, however still relating to us being made stupid, is the shit that is in the water we drink and the food we eat. This is something that is really scary. I am not going to pretend that I know that much about it, but the things I have heard have really gotten me concerned. Asan easy example of this, there is fluoride that is in a lot of our drinking water. I don't think it is in the tap water of Montreal, but it is definitelyin bottled water, and in the tap water of lots of other places (not to mention mercury... but let's not even go there). The first site I googled just now,The Schachter Center for Complementary Medicine, has this to say about fluoride: "in addition to the well documented toxic effects of fluoride, fluoride even at dosages of 1 part per million, found in artificially fluoridated water, can inhibit enzyme systems, damage the immune system, contribute to calcification of soft tissues, worsen arthritis and, of course, cause dental fluorosis in children." So that right there is scary enough, but I also watchedthis crazy documentary (which I though was kind of interesting and available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5xtjxRySbg&feature=related) that saidfluoride leads to a greater rate of inactivity and is basically really bad for your brain. I am not sure what exactly is fact and what is not, but stillit's frightening that we ingest all this stuff that may be super bad for us. And even more scary is that people, ie the government, may know about its effectsand still put it in our food and water on purpose (haha, okay maybe I am getting a little paranoid... but maybe not).
All this to say that I think we as a people should be a little bit more concerned and involved in what is going on in the world. I know it is hard because there is a lot of information that we do not have access to, but if we don't start fighting to know it, we may end up a bunch of mindless idiots, slaves to an agenda we are completely oblivious to.
